About My Body 🔟

It’s perfect.

This act of self-love has done wonders for my self-esteem and self-image. It has even had the glorious side effect of actually making me more beautiful.

No, really. It is.

Regardless of how much I weigh or how tall I am… how much things have changed or moved over the years, I have worked really hard to love myself exactly as I am.

I didn’t use to feel this way. A long time ago, I held myself to some unrealistic airbrushed standard. Physically and emotionally. No one can be satisfied with themselves under those conditions. I was “flawed” physically, but I was emotionally damaged as well. I had shame about situations that weren’t my fault and bad behavior that created more shame. I felt ugly.

I don’t know what was the turning point or the magic combination. When I got clean and sober, I stopped wreaking havoc on my life and others’. Therapy helped. Meditation… Rigorous honesty and transparency. Radical self care. Ongoing introspection and surrounding myself with people who make me feel good. All of these things are paramount and continuous.

I also had a wife. Even though the years we spent together were damaging in so many ways, she did demonstrate a love for her body unlike any I had ever seen. I watched her in awe as she displayed what she had without self-consciousness or discomfort. I wanted to feel that sense of ease and freedom.

Years ago, I made a decision not to talk disparagingly about myself. No self-deprecating comments. No insults. No negative comparisons to others’ bodies. Regardless of whatever physical attributes I might want to criticize, I do not give myself permission to point them out. Years of this cognizance has had a profound effect.

This act of self-love has done wonders for my self-esteem and self-image. It has even had the glorious side effect of actually making me more beautiful. Both in the glowing-from-the-inside-out perspective, as well as relieving stress and decreasing quantities of adrenaline and cortisol, affecting my skin, weight, hair, and smile in positive ways. As I lighten up and love my body, my body loves me more.

The added bonus is that I love your body, too. It’s perfect. Really, it is.
